Cast of Wonders 119: Pictures in Crayon

Pictures in Crayon

by Elizabeth Shack

At recess the Arks dot the sky like unwinking stars. Ally and her friends aren’t supposed to talk about it, eyes wide above the breathing masks that muffle their voices, but they do. Where they’ll go, what they’ll bring. Every kid Ally knows has a suitcase packed, just in case they win. Hers has photos from the zoo and a birthday card her little brother Rafe drew in red crayon. He called the scribble Mars.

The only time they don’t talk is after the monthly drawing, when no one can bear it. Some kids, somewhere, were chosen, but it’s not anyone they know. At recess no one looks up. Those nights, Rafe crawls into her bed. He doesn’t understand–at four he’s barely old enough to enter the lottery–but he knows something’s wrong. Their parents are crying, and Ally will keep him safe.

Ally lies awake with her arms around her little brother. In the morning she repacks his suitcase for next month and tells him stories about Mars.

Camp Myth: Phoenix Watching (Chapter 9)

By Chris Lewis Carter

Welcome back, campers! Ready for Chapter 9?

Last week Felix met Loam the golem, and took a tour of Camp Myth.

Tonight’s a big night for the campers, let’s get started. Now where were we. Ah yes…

This week’s camper spotlight is Ox, the Warmhearted Warrior.

Felix says “Ox is, without a doubt, the toughest Minotaur wearing a Camp Myth sash, but he also has a baby snowy owl, Olot, that never leaves his side. Yesterday, an Ogre thought that it would be a good idea to steal the bird for an afternoon snack. About three seconds later, Ox made sure that the Ogre’s next meal would have to fit through a straw. I guess Minotaurs can have a soft side after all.”

Ox was invented by Roger Sellars. You can find the picture of him on the Camp Myth webpage.

Welcome back, campers! Ready for Chapter 7?

Last week Felix made it safely back aboard, thanks to Lil’s dryad magic and the dramatic appearance of Moxie the Kitsune.

Still listening campers? Good, now where were we. Ah yes…

This week’s camper spotlight is Mayumi, the High Flying Vulpine.

Felix says “Mayumi the Kitsune came all the way from Tokyo to attend Camp Myth! I found her hanging around the Golem Statuary, which she enjoys because they remind her of the sculptures and stone carvings found in her native homeland.”

Mayumi was invented by Trudy Goold. You can find the picture of her on the Camp Myth webpage.

Welcome back, campers! Ready for Chapter 6?

Last week Argee showed us he really doesn’t like to be teased, and then the roc carrying their bus lost one of his handles, sending Felix skyward!

Quick! Let’s find out what happens to Felix!! Where were we, campers? Ah yes…

This week’s camper spotlight is Anthea, Herald of the Forest.

Felix says “Sitting in the limbs of the Peridexion tree, Anthea the Dryad says there’s no place in the world where she feels more in tune with nature. I was going to tell her I’m so bad with plants that I once managed to kill a small potted cactus, but I decided to draw her this picture instead.”

Anthea was invented by Elizabeth Verbraak. You can find the picture of her on the Camp Myth webpage.

Camp Myth: Phoenix Watching (Chapter 5)

By Chris Lewis Carter

Welcome back, campers! Ready for Chapter 5?

Last week our campers took to the skies, and we learned that Argee likes crossword puzzles. And apparently the mysterious voice in Felix’s head does too…

Let’s continue with the story! Now listen close campers, where were we. Ah yes…

This week’s episode art is a camper spotlight of Drew, the Flora Photographer.

Felix says “Drew the Centaur is always happiest when he’s taking pictures or discovering weird plants. Sometimes, if he’s lucky, he can do both at the same time, like when he stumbled across a fully-matured Mandrake. I didn’t stick around to see how things turned out, though. Never trust foliage that might be smarter than you. It’s a rule of mine.”

Drew was invented by Kate Trgovac. You can find the picture of him on the Camp Myth webpage.

Welcome back, campers! Ready for Chapter 4?

Last week we learned Felix is a fae, and we met both Argee the Cyclops and Lil the Dryad. And did Lil just say flight? I hope Felix and Argee aren’t afraid of heights!

Let’s find out what happens next! Now listen close campers, where were we. Ah yes…

This week’s camper spotlight is Sebastian, the first class golem crafter.

Felix says “Fae aren’t known for their creativity, but Sebastian is able to build Golems that are incredible works of art. For some reason, though, he keeps calling them “Marionettes.” When I asked if he could teach me his secret, he told me to look up some school named “Vermilion Academy.” I’ll have to check it out!”

Sebastian was created Studio Kontrabida. You can find the picture of him on the Camp Myth webpage.

Camp Myth: Phoenix Watching (Chapter 3)

By Chris Lewis Carter

Welcome back, campers! Ready for Chapter 3?

Last week Felix checked in for his journey to summer camp. We saw more of the creatures Felix shares his world with, and we learned about all the types of supernatural contraband the camp keeps an eye out for. I wonder what golem scrolls do…

Now listen close campers, where were we. Ah yes…

This week’s camper spotlight is Amelia, the Aquatic Animal Admirer.

Felix says “Sirens are known to form lifelong bonds with sea creatures, which explains why Amelia found it so hard to leave her pet Tiger-Dolphins, Umbra and Penumbra, back home for the summer. I drew this picture to help make her feel better. Also, to learn more about Tiger-Dolphins. Turns out, it’s a Siren thing. Figures.”

Amelia was created by Dwayne Hart. You can find the picture of her on the Camp Myth webpage.

Cast of Wonders 79: Loma’ai

Loma’ai

by Jessie Bishop Powell

When people asked about Johnna’s dark skin and hair and her grey-violet eyes, her mother Manda said, “She was my surprise baby.” Those traits, especially the eyes, belonged to the Auric tribe, whose standing with the ruling council was never stable. So the askers usually pretended to think Johnna was descended from her stepfather, even though she looked nothing like him or her younger siblings on that side.

Her father, when Johnna saw him once a year, was more honest. “Pfft. Accident,” he said. “The caravan leader had a fetching daughter, and I had a terminal problem keeping up my drawers.”
