The Best Busker in the World

by R.K. Duncan

“The best busker in the world never plays in the same place twice.  He is too busy searching.  But maybe, just maybe, you will hear him once.  If you hear him, you will have to see him, even if the first notes of his music drift to you from streets away, completely opposite from wherever you intended to go.  Once you hear a single note, it will draw you along like an invisible string, tugging at the knot in the center of your chest where you keep your secret fears and disappointments.  Wherever you find him— a dusty back street in a sleepy town, a bustling avenue in the rush-hour of a big city, a lonely campground haunted by only a few brave souls and stubborn wanderers— the sight will burn itself into your memory almost as deeply as the music.”

Our story this week is haunting Speaking to Skull Kings, by Emily B. Cataneo. Emily is a writer of dark literary speculative fiction. She grew up in New England, lived in Boston, Massachusetts for seven years, and now lives in Berlin, Germany, where she works as a freelance journalist when she’s not writing fiction. In her spare time, she’s usually riding her bike, reading about the early twentieth century or navigating the tricky waters of learning German.
Her work has appeared in anthologies such as Chiral Mad 2, the Stoker-nominated Qualia Nous, and Steampunk World, as well as the magazines Black Static, The Dark and Betwixt. She is a 2013 graduate of the Odyssey Writing Workshop in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Emily has a story coming out in shortly in Interfictions: A Journal of Interstitial Arts called The Emerald Coat and Other Wishes. It features a deadly coat, ghosts in bathrooms, and a young woman who must decide whether to follow in her family’s peculiar footsteps.

You can find her on online, on Twitter and on Facebook all under her name.

For your narrators we welcome back Katherine Inskip and Jeremy Carter.

Katherine teaches astrophysics for a living and spends her spare time populating the universe with worlds of her own, which you can read at her blog, Trisigmatic.

Jeremy Carter teaches by day and produces audio by night. He has produced stories for Starshipsofa, Dunesteef, Far Fetched Fables, Journey Into and this episode for us. Thanks Jeremy!

Both Katherine and Jeremy are also on Twitter, as Chesneycat and JECarter76, respectively.
